What is bone broth
Bone broth is exactly what it sounds like. Bone broth is stock made from boiling bones for a long time to extract nutrients and minerals. Bone broth is nutrient-dense and gives your whole system a boost.
Healing benefits of bone broth
- Gut healing the collagen extracted from the bones is a powerful nutrient that heals the gut lining and soothes digestive concerns
- Boosts immunity
- Supports healthy connective tissue and joints
- Is calming and restorative
How to make your own bone broth
Ingredients
- 1-2lbs bones. Chicken, beef or lamb all work well. Pieces with more cartilage work best, so look for joints. If you’re up for it, chicken feet work well.
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar – this is important as it allows the nutrients to be extracted from the bones. It does not leave a vinegar taste.
- 6 cloves of garlic
- 2 bay leaves
- Veggies roughly chopped (2 onions, 2 carrots, 2 stalks of celery)
- Salt and pepper
- Water
Directions
- Place bones, veggies, and salt and pepper in a stock pot or slow cooker
- Add apple cider vinegar
- Fill slow cooker to the brim with water
- Cook on low heat for 24hrs
- Check occasionally and top up water if need be
- After broth is done, strain out veggies and bones leaving just the broth
- After broth cools, skim the fat off the top. Your broth will have a jelly-like consistency which is a good sign that your broth is full of collagen and gelatin.
- Can store in the refrigerator for 5 days or the freezer for up to 6 months
- Enjoy 1 cup daily
Tips
- For best nutrient quality, do not roast bones beforehand
- Do not overload your broth with too many veggies as this will impede nutrient extraction
- Use a low heat. High heat will degrade the nutrient quality
- Store in glass containers, not plastic
- Make sure to cook for long enough. This process takes time 24-48 hours
- Can be used in soups, stews or on its own
- Can be reheated with other healing herbs such as ginger root, turmeric root or your herbs of choice
Enjoy your cup of nourishment!
