What Is A Naturopathic Doctor?
A naturopathic doctor is somebody who holds a doctor of naturopathy degree from an accredited naturopathic college. Naturopathic doctors are trained in much the same way medical doctors are. Many of the courses taught in naturopathic college – physiology, biochemistry, pathology, anatomy, etc. – are similar to those in medical school.
The primary difference is that naturopathic doctors take a more holistic, whole-body perspective to your health. They use the gentlest, least invasive treatments available to address the root cause of your ailments.
In order to practice in Ontario, naturopathic doctors must hold a license from the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. The college maintains a public register of everyone it has licensed on its website. Here is Dr. Sheila’s license.

What Are The Principles Of Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic doctors are guided in their approach to medicine by the following six tenets:
1. First, Do No Harm
Before beginning any treatment, naturopathic doctors must take the appropriate steps to minimize risks. They focus on improving your body’s healing process, rather than just suppressing your symptoms. You come to Dr. Sheila to feel better, not worse. As a result, naturopathic treatment always involves the gentlest, least invasive treatment available for a given condition. This helps you to avoid the harmful side effects commonly associated with more invasive treatments.
2. Identify And Treat The Cause
Whenever possible, the goal of naturopathic medicine is to determine the root cause of whatever is causing your troublesome symptoms. Suppressing symptoms may be beneficial in situations where a condition is untreatable – such as in palliative care. However, in general, your symptoms are a warning sign of a deeper issue. Suppressing them may actually be harmful, like addressing a house fire by turning off the fire alarm.
3. The Healing Power Of Nature
Your body has its own inherent wisdom in healing itself. Dr. Sheila will work to identify the elements in your life holding you back from a state of optimal health, and offer treatments designed to remove as many of those blocks as possible. Pharmaceutical medications have their place, but by removing these roadblocks, naturopathic treatments may be able to help you avoid the harmful side effects commonly associated with pharmaceutical drugs.
4. Doctor As Teacher
Beyond just a healthcare practitioner, it’s a naturopathic doctor’s duty to help you understand how you can take command of your own health. Dr. Sheila will take the time to explain the factors in your life influencing your health, and put together a plan designed to work within your lifestyle as much as possible. The more you understand how to improve your own health, the better you’ll be able to maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle in between visits.
5. Treat The Whole Person
Medical doctors commonly take a disease-centred approach to medicine. By contrast, naturopathic doctors takes a whole-body approach. When Dr. Sheila assesses how an illness is affecting you, she takes into account more than just your physical symptoms. She’ll explore your mental, emotional, and environmental states, as well as genetic and social factors. This is why your first appointment with Dr. Sheila is so long – she needs to fully understand your health in order to provide effective treatments.
6. Prevention
Naturopathic doctors focus on helping you achieve a greater state of overall health. While providing treatment for existing conditions is important, the ideal goal for a naturopathic treatment is help you reduce your risk of illness. By promoting healthy daily habits, assessing risk factors, and where possible, mitigating those risk factors, Dr. Sheila will help you work toward this goal. Health is more than just the absence of disease – it’s a state of optimal health.
